Mike Shiels landscape sketchbook

Riverside sketchbook

I think Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year, though you can get pretty muddy trying to paint and sketch outdoors – particularly in Mid Wales! Here’s a page from one of my current sketchbooks (I’ve placed a card mount over the page to frame the picture), an acrylic and pencil painting of a local damp, woodland stream in November, from todays foray.

Original oil painting of the Elan Valley

New Elan Valley landscape painting

It’s been a busy few months, and I’ve produced quite a few new landscape paintings. I’ve been back to one of my favourite spots – the waterfall at Nant Dolfolau, in the Elan Valley. A beautiful place, with dappled light and many levels of waterfall – if you’re brave enough to climb the slippery rocks!

The oil painting below depicts the lower level near to the roadside, and is framed and ready for sale! Please click here to buy this painting from my online store or click here to contact me for more details.

Ardent Gallery Summer Art Exhibition 2017 – Featured artist Mike Shiels

Ardent Gallery Summer Art Exhibition 2017 – Featured artist Mike Shiels – from the Arfent Gallery Facebook page:

Mike Shiels is one of the many talented Artists currently exhibiting in our open exhibition. Mike Shiels was born in Essex but has spent most of his adult life living in mid Wales. Mike is a landscape painter and is very fortunate to be surrounded by some of the UK’s most beautiful scenery, he endeavours to reflect this through his artwork. He says: “I enjoy sketching outdoors, observing nature and creating a record of my experiences and painting “en plein air”. These either end up as finished pieces, or act as the basis for new studio pieces.”
